Club Legend Reece Fleet To Depart Oxford City At The End Of The Season
Hoops prepare to say emotional farewell to a true Oxford City great.
Oxford City will say farewell to a club legend this summer when Reece Fleet leaves the club for pastures new.
Reece, club captain, has made close to 450 appearances for the Hoops since signing ten seasons ago.
Reece first joined City in 2011 on a free transfer from Birmingham City, where he had started as a youth team player, and played in the Southern League Premier with the Hoops.
After a spell away, the midfielder returned for a second time, and since has played a crucial role in the club's most successful era of its 140+ year history.
Fleet has captained the club in record-breaking FA Cup & FA Trophy runs, and of course in City's highest ever league finish which culminated in promotion to the fifth tier via the play-offs.
A scorer of numerous important (and impressive) goals, Fleet gave us moments that will live long in the memory of everyone associated with Oxford City FC. His goal in the Play-Off Final victory over St Albans won't be forgotten by Hoops supporters.
“Fleety has been a magnificent servant to this club” Manager Ross Jenkins said.
“He was hugely influential in our promotion winning side to take us into the National League and is a wonderful role model for any young players. Ten years with one club is such a rarity these days and he leaves with our thanks, best wishes, and a warm welcome here any time he comes back”
Owner Justin Merritt also praised Reece’s professionalism
“Reece joined the club in 2015 after signing from Solihull Moors. As manager at the time, I made this signing as an opportunity to sign young player from Oxford with a bright future.
"Reece had completed a scholarship at Birmingham City before entering into Men's football with Solihull.
"I remember Marcus Bignot, the manager at the time, insisting a sell on arrangement as he was confident Reece would progress up the pyramid. That proved to be one of the best and most influential signings we have made in the last decade.
"Reece has grown from a young fresh faced talent to a player achieving over 400 appearances, developing into a leader whose character and performances have shaped our football DNA.
"There have been so many highs and some notable lows on the way, but throughout Reece has been a credit to himself, his family and the football club.
"Thank you for everything, Reece."
Monday's final home game of the season against Rushall Olympic will be a chance to say thank you and good luck to a true Oxford City legend.
Everyone at Oxford City would like to place on record their sincere thanks to Reece for ten years of incredible service.
Wherever the journey takes you next, you will always be welcome back at Oxford City FC.
Once a Hoop. Always a Hoop.
