LEWIS COYLE | EVERY GAME IS LIKE A FINAL
After a comfortable 3-0 victory over Hemel Hempstead Town, Lewis Coyle insists the team are still taking things ‘one game at a time’.
City host relegation-threatened Cheshunt on Saturday at the RAW Charging stadium, the first of eight huge matches between now and the end of the season.
Last weekend’s convincing win saw City get back to winning ways after a run of four games without one, and Coyle was keen to emphasise its importance to the squad.
“It was massive to get the win on Saturday,” he said.
“We’ve obviously had a bit of a sticky patch and we knew that it was massive to get three points; we went out there and it was a convincing win as well. It puts us in good stead now for the big few weeks coming up."
Coyle, who has chipped in with four goals from his wide role this term, said of his own performances so far: “I think I’ve played well this season.
"I’ve managed to keep the shirt for most of the season which is positive, because last season I was sort of in and out of the team. I’ve played a different position to what I have in the last couple of years, but it’s good to have a run of games, and with the team we’ve had a good year.
"Now we just need to push on for the last couple of weeks and get as many points as we can."
City now enter the final weeks of the season, with just eight games remaining - the first of which will be at home to a resilient Cheshunt side aiming to avoid relegation in their first National League South campaign.
“Every game leading up to the end of the season now is going to be like a cup final. You’ve got teams at the other end of the table trying to fight for survival, the same as we’re trying to fight for the play-offs.
"I think whoever we come across now, at this time of the season, it’s going to be a tough game. We’ve just got to go out like it’s our last game of the season and try and get those three points."
With just six points currently separating third and eighth in the Vanarama National League South, Coyle was keen to stress the importance of taking each week as it comes.
“I don’t want to say ‘Yeah we’re going to make the play-offs’, because the table’s so tight. We’ve just got to take it one game at a time, and then in eight games time, hopefully we are in and around it. If we keep playing the way we have been, I don’t think we’ll be far away.”
