City Hit Four to Secure Important Win Against Warrington

Warrington Town 0

Oxford City celebrated Non-League Day with a hugely important win over Warrington Town, with two goals in each half securing a convincing score line for Ross Jenkins' men.

Jayden Carbon opened the scoring for the Hoops, who made the most of a mistake from Daniel Atherton in the Warrington goal, before Peter Clarke turned into his own net moments later to see City two up.

Two further goals in a five minute spell as a Josh Ashby free-kick and a Lewis Coyle goal ensured the points stayed in Oxfordshire this afternoon.

Both sides had sights of goal in the first half an hour, but neither goalkeeper was particularly tested.

Laurie Walker had to be alert early on when a ricochet off Tom Scott fell his way, but was a routine catch for the City keeper.

City caused problems, particularly through the dangerous Carbon down the right. He was at the heart of both of City's best opening moves, as he saw a shot himself blocked well, before he slotted Zac McEachran through, but his poked shot was straight at Atherton.

But with ten minutes to play, the all important breakthrough for the Hoops came.

A pass back to Atherton saw him in a foot race with Carbon. The keeper initially won the ball, but turned into trouble with Josh Parker lurking. The City forward robbed the ball and passed to Carbon, who smashed home.

Moments later, Parker forced a fine save from Atherton as his goalbound shot was turned around the post. But from the resulting corner, Lewis Coyle's in-swinging corner went through to the backpost, where Clarke could only slice into his own net trying to clear.

Half time: Oxford City 2-0 Warrington Town

City came out after the break as they'd finished the first period, and were looking to kill the game off as soon as possible.

After Tom Scott was brought down on the edge of the box on 54 minutes, Josh Ashby's free-kick was low and hard, and took a wicked deflection to leave Atherton with no chance as it slipped past his grasp.

If the game wasn't already beyond doubt, it certainly was five minutes later. A poor clearance from the Warrington defence saw the ball fall to Coyle whose fierce shot across goal found the far corner of the net.

City could have added to their lead, with Atherton making a superb save from a close range Zac McEachran effort minutes after, and not long after a ball across to Aaron Drewe forced a great block by the defence.

Corie Andrews and Rohan Vaughan came on in the latter stages, and they linked up nicely as the former found the latter, but Vaughan was on the stretch and couldn't guide it in.

Warrington to their credit, didn't give up and in the closing stages starting bearing down on the City goal some more. Walker, however, was equal to what they could throw, and even made a decent save from a swerving effort in the closing stages.

There was nearly another moment for Atherton late on, in a near carbon copy of the first goal, as with the ball at his feet nearly lost it to Andrews, but this time the Warrington keeper just about kept his feet.

City saw out a huge win, and also a big clean-sheet, but the games still come thick and fast, with a visit to Scarborough Athletic coming up on Tuesday night, before returning to the MGroup Stadium next Saturday for the visit of Radcliffe. Buy your ticket here.
