MATCH REPORT: St Albans City 1-1 Oxford City

Joe Iaciofano’s penalty against his former club salvaged Oxford City a point in a 1-1 draw away at St Albans City In Vanarama National League South.

Ross Jenkins and Andy Ballard made one change from the team that hit Tonbridge Angels for five on Saturday. Harry Kyprianou came into the side to replace the injured Canice Carroll.


A clash between two promotion hopefuls brought with it some end-to-end action throughout the game but it was the Hoops who started off the brighter of the two sides.


Iaciofano, lining up against his former club for the second time this season looked sharp and he almost put City ahead twelve minutes into the contest, but he could only poke an effort towards Saints ‘keeper Michael Johnson.


Zac McEachran was causing St Albans numerous problems in the first-half and it wasn’t long until the midfielder showcased his talent to set-up Gatlin O’Donkor. He danced through a crowd of defenders before picking out Gatlin O’Donkor but the Oxford United loanee couldn’t find the target with the goal gaping.


The hosts were looking threatening on the counter and Alex Lankshear almost capitalised on this. However, he couldn’t direct his shot on target and the effort sailed high and wide over the post.


Half-Time: St Albans 0-0 Oxford City


Five minutes after the interval, the hosts took the lead. A counter-attack down the right wing led to Lankshear whipping in a cross into the box and Shaun Jeffers blasted the ball past Dudzinski from close range.


The hosts continued to trouble the City goal. Mitchell Weiss was the next to try his luck when he sent a powerful effort towards goal that stung the palms of Ben Dudzinski.


Seven minutes from time, City were given a lifeline when Jacob Bancroft spun his marker just inside the penalty area. His agility was too much for defender Avan Jones, and he was taken down. Penalty.


Joe Iaciofano stepped up to take the penalty and with his trademark hop, skip and jump placed the ball into the net against his former club.


The last five minutes consisted of both teams desperately searching for a winner. Shaun Jeffers was left scratching his head when he didn’t find the net for a second, somehow the striker missed the ball with the net gaping from inside the six-yard box.


Josh Ashby came close too with a free-kick at the death but his effort floated over the crossbar.
