Oxford City Women Through To Final!

Ethan Gough • February 15, 2022

Oxford City Women’s team were victorious on Sunday afternoon at the Velocity Stadium with a 4-2 win over Barton United in the County Cup semi-final.

City started off brightly with a couple of good chances in the first ten minutes, with the first opportunity forcing the Barton goalkeeper into a save and the second only narrowly going over the crossbar.

However, the early pressure would pay dividends and Ellie White would open the scoring for the Hoops with a strike from 20 yards, leaving the keeper unable to reach the ball and giving City the lead

.Mark Andrews’ side continued their first half domination with a flurry of chances and threatening the Barton goal some more, and even hitting the woodwork with one of the efforts

.With 10 minutes left of the half, Jess Biggerstaff played a tidy pass through to Amelia Alves-Martin who doubled the lead for the Hoops and put them in good stead to advance through to the final

.However, Barton had other ideas, as on the stroke of half-time, a lobbed ball over the City back line found the Barton striker who slotted into the bottom corner and in turn giving the away side a lifeline in the cup tie

.Just past the hour mark the visitors notched again with a strike from way out, and as a result making the game all even with less than half an hour on the clock, and a place in the final at stake

.White, the scorer of City’s first of the afternoon, won a penalty for the Hoops and then took the spot-kick herself and gave the keeper no chance by placing the ball into the top corner to put City back in the driving seat

.Deep in added time Eve Blake wrapped up proceedings for City by adding a 4th to the scoresheet and securing the cup final spot for the Hoops, leaving Mark Andrews and his side within touching distance of some silverware
