Oxford City Women are back in action on Sunday (2pm) as they face Woodley United at the MGroup Stadium following on from a 3-1 defeat to league leaders, Ascot.
Kiera Maskell has echoed Manager Connor Walton’s sentiments that City could have taken something away from the game against Ascot, she said: “I think we had a good performance against Ascot, and it was a game we could have won.”
The upcoming game against Woodley sees fourth take one fifth in the league and City will be looking to get back to winning ways. Maskell said: “We beat them 6-3 last around and if we go into it thinking we have to fight for it and not be complacent then we can definitely take all three points.”
Historically a tight fixture and with just one point separating the two sides, it will be a good marker for how City have progressed through the season.
“It could be the game which proves we are the better side. They have to come here so it will be nice to get a win at home after losing last week.”
Maskell, City’s goalkeeper, joined on trial and quickly established herself in the first team. She said: “I was aiming for the development side and when I got the call-up, I was really excited.
“When I started talking to Connor about fully integrating into the side, I was really happy because I wasn’t expecting it so quickly.”
With Ascot on the verge of clinching promotion, the Women’s side have their sights set on the cup.
“We’re hoping for the cup and we’re treating every game like a cup final, we should be able to get some wins. I know Ascot are quite far ahead in the league but as a team we want to win every game remaining.”
