August 8, 2024

We take a closer look at our opening day stats.

The Sam Cox era at Oxford City starts with a trip to Merseyside to face Marine in Vanarama National League North.

Here's some interesting facts ahead of our opening day clash.

  1. The Hoops are 3-3-6 on the opening day when playing in the sixth tier.

Since the 2012/13 season City's only wins on the opening day in step two have come in 2014/15 (1-0 vs Hyde United), 2016/17 (2-1 vs Welling United), 2020/21 (2-0 vs Bath City).

2. Marine are well known for their famous FA Cup run in 2020/21 when they faced Tottenham Hotspur in the 3rd Round.

3. Spurs ran out as 5-0 winners on that occasion. One of the goalscorers on the evening was Alfie Devine who City Manager Sam Cox has coached during his time in Tottenham's academy.

4. In that famous cup run, Marine knocked out Colchester United in the First Round of the competition. That's a specific achievement that both club's share, after the Hoops knocked out Colchester at the first round stage in 2017.

5. This will be City's first ever match on Merseyside. Or will it? That's a slightly controversial stat as City have previously faced Ellesmere Port-based side Vauxhall Motors in the past. However, we're labelling that as Cheshire.

6. This will be the first time that the two clubs have faced each other.
