Kai McKenzie-Lyle signs for Oxford City

July 5, 2024

Goalkeeper is Sam Cox's first signing of the summer.

Oxford City are delighted to announce the signing of Goalkeeper Kai McKenzie-Lyle ahead of the new season.

The Guyana international becomes Sam Cox’s first new signing as Oxford City Manager and the eighth player to join the squad after a number of retentions from last season’s squad.

The former Liverpool & Barnet shot stopper spent last season with step three side Folkestone Invicta, but will now step up to National League North with the Hoops.

A towering shot-stopper at 6ft 5in, Kai spoke of his delight after signing at Court Place Farm.

“It’s amazing to get the deal done,” Kai told www.oxfordcityfc.co.uk .

“After coming to the club for the first time, I think it’s a really good set-up and there’s some really good people.

“I’m looking forward to playing in this division (National League North). It’s been a long summer and I’m excited to getting back playing.

“I can’t wait for the first game of pre-season on Saturday.”

Oxford City Manager Sam Cox added: “I’m delighted to have Kai with us.

“He had some offers in the National League and the potential of that came up.

“I consider him a friend, someone who I can rely on, and a good person.”

Kai McKenzie-Lyle signs new Oxford City contract with Sam Cox and Andy Sinnott.

Born in London, McKenzie-Lyle joined Tottenham Hotspur’s academy at under-10 level before moving across North London to Barnet.

He progressed through the youth ranks with the Bees, and went on to make one senior appearance for the club.

He then went on to join Liverpool after a successful trial period with the Premier League giants, and represented the Reds at U23 level.

After leaving Anfield, he signed a two-year deal with Cambridge United in 2022 before joining National League South side Welling United upon the expiry of his contract at the Abbey Stadium.

In the international scene, McKenzie-Lyle has one of the most unique (and crazy) stories on the international stage.

The Goalkeeper was called up to the Guyana national team after the country’s football federation were alerted to his eligibility by a researcher from the game Football Manager.

Moreover, Kai made his debut for Guyana versus Suriname in 2016, and scored on his debut in a 3-2 defeat against Suriname.

His second appearance for the Caribbean-based nation was slightly more muted, saving a penalty against Jamaica.

Everyone at Oxford City FC wishes Kai the very best of luck throughout his time with the club.

Welcome to Court Place Farm, Kai.
