Oxford City return to East Anglia as they face King's Lynn in midweek in the hope of ending their three-game winless run in the Vanarama National League North (7:45pm KO).
Sat just five points above the relegation zone and with a series of tough fixtures coming up, the Hoops will be desperate to find their form and begin picking up points.
Earlier in the season, it was the Linnets who took the spoils fro the game at The Group Stadium when they won 3-1. A Corie Andrews goal early in the second half was not enough to spark the comeback for City as the Linnets put the game to bed with just over ten minutes remaining.
The Hoops take on a King's Lynn side within reach of a playoff position. King's Lynn will be hoping their talisman Jonny Margetts can act as the catalyst for an end-of-season push toward promotion.
This game will surely have repercussions for both sides whatever the result.
The Walks – Tuesday 18th February – 7:45pm
Vanarama National League North
The 2-0 defeat to Hereford on Saturday ended the three-game unbeaten run for the Linnets. Draws against Rushall Olympic and Radcliffe followed by an important victory against Curzon Ashton have put Tuesday’s hosts well within touching distance of a playoff spot.
Their form at The Walks is strong. On home form alone, they sit sixth in the league and have managed 1.75 points per game, compared to the 1.66 points per game they have averaged at all venues this season.
The Linnets haven’t scored more than once since they hosted Marine in mid-January. They have scored 1.19 goals per game this season but over the last eight games have netted once per game.
It’s been a tough few weeks for the Hoops with defeats to Leamington, Peterborough Sports and Needham Market, but they will be hoping for a swift turn in fortunes in midweek.
City have lost five of their last eight games in the league and the stats are quickly deteriorating. They have scored just 0.50 goals per game over the last eight games and have conceded an average of 2.00 goals per game.
City have won once in their last seven away trips and will be hoping for a return to their early season away form when they managed to pick up wins against Radcliffe, Warrington and Hereford.
This is Lakeland’s second season in charge of the Linnets. The 39-year-old left Curzon Ashton to join King’s Lynn.
Lakeland began his coaching career in 2006, at Blackburn Rovers, in charge of their women’s team, before moving to Curzon Ashton. His first spell at the club resulted in him moving to Northwich Victoria and Farsley Celtic where he enjoyed huge success.
Lakeland returned to Curzon Ashton in 2021, six years after he left, but would ultimately join King’s Lynn when Mark Hughes was sacked following a poor start to last season.
The Linnets’ top scorer, Margetts has nine this season despite missing nearly 3 months due to a back injury from when he collided with the post against Curzon Ashton in late September.
His last goal for King’s Lynn came from the spot as he managed to salvage a point for the Linnets against Marine at The Walks.
The prolific number 10 joined King’s Lynn in January 2024 from Matlock Town but began his career at Hull City. Despite never making an appearance in the Football League for the Tigers, Margetts did turn out for Cambridge United, Tranmere Rovers, Lincoln City and Scunthorpe United.
