Match Preview Oxfordshire Senior Cup Final: Oxford City vs Oxford United
Oxford City hope to make it a hat-trick of Oxfordshire Senior Cup victories against local rivals Oxford United who look to end their six year drought.
Oxford City
The Hoops look to continue their successful season by lifting the OSC trophy for the third season in a row (*In which the final has been played), only three days after securing a 2021/22 Vanarama National League South play-off position.
City’s two previous victories in the cup both came in high scoring fashion! In 2018, City scored five in an eight-goal thriller against Southern League Division One Central side Kidlington FC. Then in the following season, Reece Fleet’s long-range finish secured a comeback in a drama-filled 4-3 victory against Banbury United.
In this season’s previous round, Joe Iaciofano scored a brace as the Hoops saw out a 1-4 win against North Leigh FC. Ross Jenkins also gave Velocity Programme prospects Latrell Humphrey and Niko Nemomen a position in the squad for the fixture, embracing his in-house player development philosophy.
Oxford United
The U’s are the highest-ranked side in the OSC, competing in League One, three divisions above the Hoops.
Similar to Jenkins, United manager Karl Robinson & Head of Academy Dan Harris have taken the opportunity of the cup to give United’s Academy graduates the chance to showcase their talents. In their last cup outing, Adam Smith and Tyler Goodrham scored in a 2-0 win over Thame United at the Velocity Stadium in early March.
United have failed to lift the OSC since 2016, where they convincingly beat the Hoops 6-1 at the Kassam Stadium. The side did reach the final the following season but lost out to North Leigh FC in a tight 2-1 fixture.
