MATCH REPORT | OXFORD CITY 1-0 CHESHUNT

Nicole Hayes • March 20, 2023

Oxford City secured back-to-back wins in Vanarama National League South after beating Cheshunt by one goal to nil.

Josh Parker's finish within the first two minutes proved to be the difference, after the striker poked home from Josh Ashby's free-kick. Cheshunt applied some late pressure in the second-half but rarely tested City goalkeeper Adnan Kanuric.

Ross Jenkins named an unchanged team to the side that beat Hemel Hempstead last Saturday.

The Hoops came flying out of the traps, winning a free-kick on the edge of box inside 40 seconds. Raul Da Silva's foul earned the Cheshunt defender a yellow card .Ashby then floated a free-kick into the box, and there was Josh Parker ready and waiting to stab home with the away side barely even touching the ball up until then.

The Hoops continued to maintain their high press, forcing the Cheshunt defence to play backwards rather than forwards on multiple occasions.

The first shot from Cheshunt came in the 24th minute, seeing Emmanuel Maja fire an effort wide from the edge of the box. An effort that didn't trouble Kanuric but was a sign of the dangers that the Amber's possessed.

Although this was the Ambers' first shot of the game, they were looking very dangerous on the counter-attack.

City were starting to relax and find their rhythm in this game, playing excellent one touch football, so well in fact that Ashby managed to fire a shot at goal, but the midfielder couldn't find enough power on the effort and it was straight at 'keeper Adam Desbois.

Furthermore, an excellent chance for City came with just ten minutes to go in the first-half. A corner from Ashby landed perfectly on the edge of the 6-yard box, and Canice Carroll rose highest. However, his header brushed inches wide past the post.

Minutes before the interval, Maja had another great chance for the visitors but the midfielder couldn’t manage to strike it cleanly and scuffed his effort.

Half time: Oxford City 1-0 Cheshunt

Oxford City managed to keep up their high intensity into the second half seeing a brilliant chance moments after kick-off. McEachran managed to poke the ball through to Ashby who could not manage to get a shot away. A huge let off for Cheshunt.

City started to crank up the pressure with Williams-Bushell twisting and turning through the Cheshunt defence. He could not manage to get a clean strike away and his sliced shot was deflected wide out.

The Hoops came so close to a second with Williams-Bushell again the instigator, played an excellent through ball to Klaidi Lolos. However, Desbois read the ball superbly and managed to rush off his line and saved his side under pressure from the City forward.

Moments later and City had another great chance. Alfie Potter managed to go around the keeper but with it being such a tight angle, he had to lay it back to Lewis Coyle. Coyle’s strike could not hit the target, and his shot was fired wide. Cheshunt could breathe again.

With 15 minutes to go, Cheshunt had their best chance in the second half. Ken Charles’s deep cross into the box managed to find Lewis Hobbs but he couldn't get his bearings right and shot just wide of the post.

Cheshunt began to pile on the pressure, sending long throws directly into the Oxford City box from substitute Isaac Newton. A brilliant moment arose as Newton’s throw was flicked onto Taylor McKenzie but it went straight into the hands of Kanuric rather than an amber shirt.

As the game continued the atmosphere got more and more tense. Both sides had so much at stake and the next goal would've been crucial. Cheshunt manager Craig Edwards was kicking every ball on the sidelines in particular, so much so that referee Harry Wager gave him a yellow card.

However, City managed to see things through and the last chance of the game even came from Zac McEachran who managed to cut inside and take a shot away from the edge of the box. His strike could not stay down though and it floated over the crossbar. A chance that rather summed up proceedings, on a game where City weren't at their best.

The win keeps City in third position in Vanarama National League South.
