Klaidi Lolos grabbed his fifth of the season from the penalty spot just before the interval and there was a first goal in Oxford City colours for Aaron Williams-Bushell two minutes from time. The result means City have now won their last four games in National League South without conceding a goal.
With the tight gap between Saturday’s win at Weymouth, Ross Jenkins opted to make two changes to his side. Andre Burley and Williams-Bushell both came in for Charlie Rowan and Lewis Miccio.
In all honesty, the first half wasn’t the most spectacular of affairs. Hampton were defensively solid, compact and made things difficult for City in the final third and restricted the Hoops to long-range efforts.
However, the visitors themselves also found a resilient backline in their path, with Temi Babalola’s tame effort flying over the crossbar and Kurran-Browne firing straight at Ben Dudzinski.
However, the Hoops must’ve been wondering how they weren't ahead after the half hour mark when Muchechetere came close. Williams-Bushell’s ran to the by-line and squared a ball that fell perfectly into the path of the young striker with the goal gaping. However, he directed the shot wide whilst off balance.
Hampton’s game plan was working well. The visitors’ defensive shape was impressive and they kept City at bay… until the stroke of half-time.
The lively Williams-Bushell jinked in between the Hampton defence and was upended in the box by Ruaridh Donaldson. Penalty.
Klaidi Lolos stepped up and scored his second penalty in as many games to put the Hoops ahead.
Half-time: Oxford City 1-0 Hamption & Richmond
The second-half was a much more entertaining affair. This time it was City’s turn to be compact and defensively astute, as Ross Jenkins’ side fended off numerous attempts from Stefan Ilic.
Just after the hour mark, it was almost two. Klaidi Lolos rose highest to head home from a floated Williams-Bushell cross but his header came crashing back off the crossbar with the Goalkeeper stranded.
Moreover, two minutes later, it was Hampton’s turn to hit the woodwork. Jake Gray’s header fell into the path of Dean Inman and his header looked destined to land in the top corner. Thankfully though, the midfielder’s effort bounced off the upright.
The game was alive with both sides looking for that elusive third goal, but it was City who eventually found it two minutes from time.
Aaron Williams-Bushell, again bamboozling the Hampton defenders with his low sense of gravity, worked his way into the box and fired a low drive at goal. His effort stung the palms of Hampton Goalkeeper Mark Smith, but the shot was ultimately too powerful and squirmed into the back of the net.
A first goal for AWB and very much deserved.
From then on in it was a case of seeing the game out in a professional manner, which City did. Another win for the Hoops and another clean-sheet. Four in a row for both of those feats to be precise.
The win takes City to fifth in National League South with a game in hand over their play-off rivals. Next up, a tricky test away to Welling United.
