MATCH REPORT: Oxford City 3-1 Dover Athletic

November 15, 2022

Three first-half goals from Joe Iaciofano, Josh Ashby and Zac McEachran secured a superb 3-1 victory for Oxford City over Dover Athletic in Vanarama National League South.

Ross Jenkins made one change to the side that drew with Hemel Hempstead at the weekend. Alfie Potter was replaced by Latrell Humphrey-Ewers.

The match got off to a cautious start with both teams trying to figure each other out and win the ball back in the centre of the field. However, there was a small negative for City when Josh Parker went down with an injury and was replaced by Joe Iaciofano after fifteen minutes.

Despite being a forced change, it didn't take Iaciofano long to get his name on the scoresheet. It took the striker just seconds to collect the ball inside the box and place a shot into the corner of the net after Humphrey-Ewers bamboozled the Whites' defence with a dummy.

Three minutes later on, the Hoops were denied the chance to double their lead when Aaron Williams-Bushell was blatantly fouled inside the area. Despite that, referee Dale Wooton refused to point to the spot and Dover were handed a lifeline.

City weren't to be denied though and continued to bombard the Dover goal. Will Moses had to flick a cross off the line before Humphrey-Ewers could tap in, and the impressive youngster came close again but couldn't find the target with an effort from outside the box.

However, the lead was doubled just after the half hour mark when Josh Ashby found the net. A superb move from City down the right-wing allowed McEachran to lay the ball on a plate to Ashby, and the midfielder stroked home a shot from inside the area to put daylight between the two sides.

Dover barely had time to re-group before it was three, McEachran going from creater to goal scorer for City's third. A magic run from the midfielder caused the Dover defence enough problems, before he unleashed a shot that pinged off numerous players in the box and trickled in off his backside.

It won't be the best goal the midfielder's ever scored but he'll be happy with it nonetheless.

City almost went into the interval with a four-goal lead but luckily for the away side, Josh Ashby's free-kick flew inches wide of the post from just outside the box.

Half-Time: Oxford City 3-0 Dover Athletic

It was more one-way traffic after the break. Josh Ashby was certainly in the mood, firing over the crossbar again from another free-kick and Reece Fleet & Humphrey-Ewers both fired shots wide of the target.

Just after the hour mark, Iaciofano almost had a second. The impressive Humphrey-Ewers flicked the ball round his marker to open the space to find the City striker, but the number 9's effort grazed the top of the crossbar to spare the away side's blushes.

Despite being beaten three times, ex-City 'keeper Stuart Nelson was stopping the score from getting embarrassing. Five minutes from time Lewis Coyle snuck in at the back post to drill a shot towards goal, but the stopper did well to stick a leg out and divert the effort behind for a corner.

The only negative of the evening from a City point of view would've been in injury time when George Nikaj grabbed a late consolation. The striker was alert to his sides attack to slam home a shot from point-blank range after a header across goal. 3-1.

However, City weren't to be denied of a superb win. The football was excellent and the goals were free-flowing! Next up, another encounter with Plymouth Parkway in the FA Trophy on Saturday.
