MATCH REPORT: OXFORD CITY WOMEN 4-0 WINCHESTER CITY FLYERS

Oxford City Media Team • January 9, 2023

Oxford City Women started 2023 in perfect fashion after returning to Southern Regional Women’s Football League action with a 4-0 win over Winchester City Flyers.

Georgina Tayman's superb long-range strike in the first-half gave City the lead before goals from Ellie White and a Steph Ferreira double clinched the win.

After the Christmas break, both teams were eager to return to action and it was a tense affair in the first-half. Both teams kept the ball well and made the game an entertaining fixture.

However, City should’ve been ahead in the opening ten minutes. Ellie White timed her run to perfection to beat the offside trap but after rounding the goalkeeper her shot from a tight angle bounced back off the post.

Winchester weren’t to be dismayed though and tested City ‘keeper Jess Biggerstaff on numerous occasions. Firstly, stinging the palms of the Hoops’ stand-in goalkeeper from a free kick from outside the area and then through another long-range effort.

Before the fixture, City captain Georgina Tayman had said that she wanted to start the year as the team meant to go on, and ten minutes before half-time she backed up her words with a superb goal.

The midfielder’s marauding run with the ball opened up the angle for a long-range shot from 25-yards out and she unleashed a thunderous strike into the top corner to open the scoring.

Winchester had done well to keep the game as tight as possible but after the interval City turned on the style.

The remaining goals all game in a similar fashion. Flyers were keeping a high-line and the highly energetic City side exploited the space in behind. Ellie White made amends for her miss in the first half by beating the offside trap, running in behind and slotting past the goalkeeper to double the advantage.

Furthermore, substitute Steph Ferreira grabbed a double in the game with two goals that were carbon copies of another. Twice she timed her run perfectly and twice she rounded the goalkeeper to put the contest to bed and complete a superb return to action.

The win lifts City up to fifth in SRWL, with another big game against Eastleigh approaching on Sunday (2pm kick-off).

After the game, Captain Georgina Tayman spoke of her pride on the performance.

“The girls today were brilliant.” Said Tayman.

“We went out with fight and the determination to win and we did just that.

“I think we should all be proud of that performance as we played together and communicated well and gave 100% on the pitch.

“Now we need to take the confidence from the win into our next game with Eastleigh, as we know it’ll be another difficult game.”
