This capped off a dream debut for Sanderson who put the Hoops ahead, before Coyle doubled the lead just two minutes later. Salisbury pulled one back in second-half added time to make City sweat for the final few minutes, but ultimately this proved to be in vain.
The game was just three minutes old when Canice Carroll and Tom Harrison needed to combine in the box to block a series of goalbound efforts from the hosts and prevent an early lead.
However, the Hoops quickly got into their groove and took control of the match, however took a while to force the goalkeeper into a save, with Klaidi Lolos forcing a good save out of Gerard Benfield on the angle, before a shot from Sanderson was held by the Salisbury keeper.
Sanderson started to cause the Salisbury defence more issues after half-time, and twice went close in the first 10 minutes after the break, with a shot over the bar, and then a break seeing Reece Fleet lay off the ball to him with his resulting shot tipped over the bar by the keeper.
However, it was to be a three-minute spell spanning the hour mark that ultimately defined the match.
As so often is the case, the ever-excellent Zac McEachran was heavily involved. A long ball over the top saw the playmaker take the ball down and, baring down on the goal, he slipped Sanderson through who had timed his run to perfection, leaving the debutant with the easy task of sliding the ball under Benfield to give the Hoops the lead.
And barely two minutes later, it was 2-0. Klaidi Lolos found McEachran in a wide position, who took a touch before knocking to Coyle unmarked in the box, who made no mistake in slamming his effort across the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner.
The game was nearly put beyond doubt heading into added time as Latrell Humphrey-Ewers came inches away from his first City goal with a cross goal shot, with a sliding Lolos also unable to slide in at the far post.
However, instead it was left to be a nervy final few minutes for the Hoops as Dan Fitchett pulled a goal back with a close-range finish, but thankfully for Ross Jenkins’ men it proved too little too late!
