MATCH REPORT: Weymouth 0-2 Oxford City
Oxford City secured their third win in as many games with a 2-0 victory away at Weymouth in Vanarama National League South.
A stunner from Lewis Coyle and a Klaidi Lolos penalty set City on their way, but Ross Jenkins’ side had to be at their best defensively with Ben Dudzinski saving a late penalty from Keelan O’Connell.
The game started at a frantic pace with the Hoops’ defence called into action early on. The lively Claudio Ofosu aimed for the corner of the goal but Canice Carroll was alert to the danger to clear the ball off the line.
However, just as the hosts looked to take the lead, City struck first. The Weymouth defence let Lewis Coyle run with the ball allowing him to cut in on his left foot and unleash a powerful drive into the far corner of the net. 1-0 City with seven minutes on the clock.
Weymouth weren’t to be dismayed though and continued to threaten but when Bradley Ash found Ofosu with a clever cut-back, the hosts were left pondering how the score wasn’t level.
The ball dropped to Ofosu on the penalty spot and the winger powered a shot towards goal, however, Coyle threw his body on the line to get over to his man and block the shot.
City could’ve well doubled their lead on the brink of half-time when Gerald Muchechetere dispossessed Weymouth’s Boutin and released Zac McEachran to run in on goal.
However, McEachran’s pass to Muchechetere was cut out by the recovering Boutin to deny a sniff of a second.
Ben Dudzinski did well to parry Tom Bearwish’s shot behind for a corner before the interval in what was a tight first-half between the two teams.
Half-time: Weymouth 0-1 Oxford City
The second-half saw both teams play out a more timid affair until the last ten minutes, when Harry Kyprianou tripped Klaidi Lolos inside the box. Penalty City.
Lolos picked himself up to take the penalty, and despite Terra’s Goalkeeper Billy Terrell best efforts to distract the striker, Lolos made no mistake from the spot to double the lead.
It seemed like game, set and match, but the hosts were handed a lifeline with five minutes left to play when O’Connell was tripped inside the area. However, Ben Dudzinski produced a superb save to deny the midfielder, and threw his body into danger to stop the re-bound.
In the post-penalty melee in the six-yard box, City’s number 1 took a kicking and play eventually stopped so he could receive treatment. Thankfully, Dudzinski was well enough to continue (albeit with some contemporary bruises).
The Hoops played out the rest of the game professionally and despite Weymouth’s best efforts to find a consolation, the solid back four of Dudzinski, Carroll, Rowan and Harrison stood firm.
All in all, it is an impressive victory for City and no more than the superb travelling fans deserved after making the 240 mile round trip to the Bob Lucas Stadium.
City move up sixth in National League South with their third win and third clean sheet on the trot.
Next up, a return to the RAW Charging Stadium for another difficult game against Hampton & Richmond on Bank Holiday Monday.
