White hat trick but Wycombe score last minute equaliser

An Ellie White hat trick wasn't quite enough to secure victory for Oxford City Women as Wycombe Wanderers headed home in the tenth minute of added time to secure a 3-3 draw at the MGroup Stadium this afternoon.
Top scorer White took her league total to 21 goals from 36 games but Wanderers weren't to be denied despite some heroic defending in the second half from City.
Connor Walton's side were twice ahead in a very open first half, but both times let the visitors back into the game straight away.
The opening goal came after 15 minutes when White twisted in the box to fire home despite the best efforts of a defender on the line, but within a minute Wycombe had leveled when Potter scored from close range
White then looked to have given them a half time lead with a powerful second goal after 43 minutes, but within thirty seconds Wycombe were back to 2-2 when Puddefoot rifled home a free kick that gave keeper Kiera Maskell; no chance
City had gone close with a Georgina Tayman drive from long distance but the away side had also rattled the bar so level at half time was probably a fair scoreline but White was not to be denied her third goal and when Emma Donohoe and Lucy White combined down the left flank White was at the near post to tap in her hat-trick goal from close range to win the game.
The visitors came back strongly and there was controversy after 72 minutes when Hoops keeper Maskell flew off her line to make a typically brave save, with the ball smacking her on the nose. The ref blew for a head injury just as Wycombe put the ball into the empty net. No goal despite protests. The excellent Maskell then annoyed Wycombe even further by making a good save, with her hands this time, from a powerful Puddefoot blast from distance and by beating away anything else they threw at her in a tense finale until a deep cross was powered home at the back post in the time added on for that earlier injury.
You'll hear a lot of Managers say 'every game is a cup final now'. For City it is: the Oxfordshire Senior Cup against Kidlington next Sunday and then the Chairman's Cup to end on. This was a good way to end the league season, all heart and determination. Let's see if they can win silverware as a fitting reward for all their efforts in a very promising season.
