The game wasn’t a classic, but it handed a number of players and a chance to get minutes into their legs and stake a claim for their place in the squad.
After the game, Jenkins spoke to www.oxfordcityfc.co.uk and said that he felt that the result was secondary on the night, and was pleased with what he saw.
“It was a good exercise and the players got some good minutes into their legs.” He said.
“I thought the game was played in a good manner, the pitch was nice and slick with it being wet. We saw a little bit of every player so overall it was a good evening.
“It’s good to see everyone back on the pitch following the off season. We’ve been working hard this week in training and it was really good to get the first forty-five minutes under our belts.
“The score doesn’t really matter tonight for us. It’s important we get those minutes in the bank.
“Hopefully we’ll have another good week in training and kick on again.”
As per the norm in pre-season, City fielded almost two separate sides to take part in both halves.
Jenkins took the opportunity to mix together younger players, trialists and seasoned pros in both halves.
Five players who featured in City's U16's squad last season featured on the night, accompanying other youngsters that had been part of the club's U23 set-up.
Moreover, the gaffer was especially impressed with their performances on the night.
“It could’ve been easy to have gone full strength in the first-half and put a younger side on in the second-half, but it’s important the young lads get a feel for the game as well.
“I thought that the boys who came into the squad from the younger age groups were brilliant tonight. So, big credit goes to them and their coaches for helping to bring them through.
“We keep our eye on our academy boys and all of the young talent we have coming through and tonight they didn’t disappoint.
“The senior boys did well to put their arms around them against a good team who had already played twice.
“You can train as much as you want but to get those real distances and match runs & movements we need minutes.
“We’re not even going to talk about tactics and shape at the moment. We just need to cover the distances and get a feel of the pitch again. We did that.”
