ROSS JENKINS | WE'RE IN A GOOD POSITION BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN GREAT

Oxford City boss Ross Jenkins has emphasised the need for a ‘professional’ approach ahead of a tough visit to an ‘experienced’ Dulwich Hamlet side in the Vanarama National League South.

In their last Vanarama National League South outing, Oxford City secured the three points in a battling 1-0 win over Cheshunt.

The win was a second consecutive league win which solidified City’s position in the play-off places as the season enters its latter stages with several clubs vying for a shot at promotion.

The Hoops currently find themselves third place in the VNLS, however Jenkins believes in the ability of his side as being better than the table suggests.

“We’ve said we don’t want to keep looking at the table but sometimes you have to” Jenkins said.

“You have to look at it and you have to reflect. You have to say to the boys, and the boys have to say to each other, that we are in a good position but good doesn’t mean great.”

Jenkins added, “I believe we are better than third.”

“I think some of our performances have been below par but last week we played Cheshunt, we didn’t play very well but we took the three points.

“I think in the back end of the season it’s really important that we keep doing that and moving forward.”

City’s next fixture is a tough visit to Dulwich Hamlet who currently sit 20th in the VNLS. However, Jenkins anticipates The Hamlet to be motivated and acknowledges what will be a tough visit to Champion Hill.

“I mean the fanbase is incredible” Jenkins stated.

“It was a real good atmosphere and on the day I think we played okay last season.

“It wasn’t the most spectacular game but in terms of the crowd and the potential the club has got and the experience they’ve got on the pitch, I think we have to respect that.

“Again, we have to go there with our tails up because we are playing well and winning games of football. We have to keep doing that and keep the momentum.”

Jenkins continued, “At the same time, it’s a game we have to tick off again and that’s the mentality. We have to go there in a professional manner and do our job.

"It’s our job to go there and perform and to go and get three points. So as long as we can go there and try to do our job to the maximum we can then I think we’ll be okay.”

In the last meeting between the two sides, the spoils were shared in a 2-2 draw at the Raw Charging Stadium in December.

Upon reflection of the reverse fixture and last season’s visit to Champion Hill, the Hoops boss highlighted the development of his men since then.

“Last time we went there, it was a really difficult game.

“They stretched us in behind and we’ve learned our lessons from then. We’ve got better and we’ve developed ourselves but again we’ve got to address that it is a physical game.

“I thought we did enough to score a few goals against them at our place, but again, in the National League South, every game is a difficult game.

“I think any team can beat any team on their day. It just depends on if your team turns up, then you’ve got a good shot of winning, but it is purely mentality this back end of the season.”
