MATCH REPORT | DULWICH HAMLET 2-2 OXFORD CITY

Patrick Lock • March 25, 2023

Four second-half goals saw Oxford City and Dulwich Hamlet share their second 2-2 draw of the season.

Olly Sanderson marked his return to City by opening the scoring, and after Hamlet took the lead, Klaidi Lolos was on hand to smash home an equaliser to ensure that the Hoops’ unbeaten record against Dulwich in the National League South remains intact.

Ross Jenkins made four changes to the side that beat Cheshunt last weekend, as Josh Parker and Andre Burley are away on international duty, while skipper Reece Fleet had picked up an injury, and Will Dawes took a place on the bench. This meant that Jack Davies, Klaidi Lolos, Alfie Potter and Latrell Humphrey-Ewers came into the starting eleven.

Notable inclusions on the bench were academy defender Andre Bromfield, who joins a league squad for the first time, and the return of striker Sanderson on loan from Fulham.

Things had got off to a bad start for the Hoops long before the start of the match, with heavy traffic and road closures around London causing the team coach to arrive late, with kick-off delayed until 3:10.

Once it got going, the opening 45 minutes was something of a cagey affair, with neither side really able to stamp their authority on the game. City had a few bright moments when getting the ball on the floor that did cause the hosts’ defence some issues.

Humphrey-Ewers twice had dangerous efforts from range. The first of these came after eight minutes as he struck an effort from outside the box towards the bottom corner, however Aaron Jones got down quickly to smother the effort.

The hosts had their moments as well, with Adnan Kanuric confidently saving a Quade Taylor volley, before Danny Mills was denied by the offside flag as he flicked an effort over the City stopper.

But in first-half added time, City were inches away from taking the lead in stunning fashion through Humphrey-Ewers. Given space outside the box following a set-piece, the midfielder sweetly caught an effort that had Jones well beaten, but was unfortunate to see it crash off the underside of the bar, onto the line, and away to safety.

Josh Ashby had time to have a shot following this which lacked power, however it took a bobble on the surface of the goalmouth on its way to Jones – something that would play a significant part in the second period.

The second period began much like the first – with few moments for either side. It was ten minutes into the half before Quade Taylor was only able to volley an effort over the bar.

However, the match sprung into life on the hour. Following a poor clearance from the Dulwich keeper, Humphrey-Ewers intercepted and played forward to Sanderson. The forward then cut onto his right foot away from his defender before confidently dispatching his effort into the bottom corner – his second ‘debut’ goal of the season!

This sparked the hosts into action, and quickly had a Ryan Blackman free-kick narrowly go the wrong side of the post, but they went one better with 20 minutes to play as a Blackman cross found Danny Rose who nodded an effort low past Kanuric to level the scores.

And a further ten minutes later, the turnaround was complete. Gianni Crichlow fired an effort at goal from around 25-yards, which landed in front of Kanuric and took a wicked bobble past the City keeper, where it would have been a regulation save.

City then went searching for a leveller, and Aaron Williams-Bushell got himself into a good position, but couldn’t keep his left footed effort down.

But another fine strike saw the scores levelled once again with three minutes to play. Some intricate play saw Lolos gain position just inside the box and he turned on the corner of the six-yard box before hammering an effort on the angle into the roof of the net.

So an hour with no goals, and then a half-hour with four goals all lead to the points being shared, in what might turn out to be a valuable result for both sides later in the season.

Next up, it’s a match against two in-form teams at the RAW Charging Stadium as Tonbridge Angels travel to face City next weekend, a 3pm kick-off.
