YOUTH TEAM SPOTLIGHT | OXFORD CITY U16

Sam Hammond • March 27, 2023

It’s been an impeccable campaign so far for our Under 16s, who sit comfortably atop the JPL Midlands League. City’s youngsters have a sublime record of 19 wins from 25 games.

A free-scoring side, City have netted an incredible 104 times across their games so far, while also boasting an impressive unbeaten home record.

To find out more about this talented group, we spoke with coach Kevin Squirrell:

“It's been a great season for the boys so far within the league, having played all of our games and currently sitting top of the table,” said Kevin.

“Within 25 games, the boys have won 19 matches, and scored 104 goals, as well as going unbeaten at home all season. This is a great testament to the hard work and efforts the players put in on a weekly basis at training and in the matches, and they are a pleasure to coach.

“We now look forward to the JPL Cup fixtures, starting on Saturday 4th March as we travel to Gloucester Elite, and then we host Grantham and Stoke RTC at home to round off the group-stage fixtures. Hopefully we can go one step further this season and win the National Cup, as the boys came runners-up last season.

“We've made the programme as close to a professional academy as possible, as the players attend weekly gym sessions with our Strength & Conditioning coach Oli, classroom and analysis sessions, as well as social events away from football.

"This has provided the opportunity for multiple players to trial for football league academy clubs, and also has seen some players feature for our U19s National League team. We have good relationships with local academies, and they are still monitoring our players closely and providing us with consistent feedback to support our players.

"It is also a huge benefit to the players that we have a close relationship with Ross Jenkins and the First Team staff, and this was evident when one of our players, Charlie Bacon, recently featured in the First Team squad vs Easington in the Oxfordshire Senior Cup. This is just one of the many examples of the fantastic pathway provided by the club and It's great to have a First Team manager who rewards youth players for their efforts."

A big well done to the team for what they've achieved so far this season. Everyone at the club is proud of what you've achieved so far!
