Sam Cox wants Oxford City to put their Bank Holiday disappointment behind them and respond against Chorley in Vanarama National League North on Saturday afternoon.
The Hoops are still looking for their first three points of the season, and two defeats in the last week have been a bitter pill to swallow.
However, Cox wants to banish any lingering senses of frustration from a stuttering start to the season as the Hoops look to push on.
“It’s been a really tough Bank Holiday.” He told www.oxfordcityfc.co.uk.
“Back-to-back defeats at any level is tough to take, but it’s a case of looking forwards.
“The boys have shown a great attitude in training and they’re all on board to try and rectify the wrongs of this weekend and try and get a result on Saturday against Chorley.
“We’re disappointed about the result and the manner of the result [vs Kidderminster], and we’re willing to bounce back.
“We’re only five matches in, but there needs to be an urgency to get points on the board and that has to be imminently.
“There does seem to be a hangover of last season’s relegation with certain things.
“It’s trying to reverse that mentality which isn’t easy, but all it takes is that one win.
“That spark, that performance can get the ball rolling and it can turn into a snowball effect.
“You look at outfits like Bromley last season who didn’t win in their first seven games and went on to win promotion.
“It is doable. It is still early. But there has to be a consciousness now where the whole squad have to start taking accountability and responsibility both individually and collectively.
“We certainly have the capabilities to do that.”
Chorley will provide a strong opposition at the weekend.
The Magpies have picked up positive results to draw away at Scunthorpe and beat Southport in their last two matches.
Cox is wary of the threats Chorley pose ahead of Saturday, but admits that City’s destiny is in their own hands and that they need to start taking their chances.
“They’re a good National League North outfit,” Cox continued.
“They’re probably the best in the league when it comes to set-pieces. We need to try and eliminate that threat.
“They’re going to be on their game after coming off the back of a really good win on Monday.
“They have some really good players who we know will be threats, but we have to do everything in our power to impose our game and eliminate counters, balls into the box and be more compact.
“At the other end, we need to be more ruthless in front of goal.
“Ultimately, to relieve pressure from the defence we need to start finishing our chances in front of goal.
“It’s all about momentum, the first win will build confidence, spirit and morale. It’s really important we go into the break with three points on the board.
“The fans have been incredibly loyal this season in supporting the players and supporting me.
“They’ve been travelling up and down the country to support us and we need to try and give them a performance to be proud of and cheer about.”
