Oxford City Women’s remarkable start to the season continued with a superb 6-3 win away at Woodley this afternoon
Two goals from Ellie White, two from Emily Harris and strikes from Ellie Walecki and Issy Bradley gave the Hoops three important league points as well as avenging defeat to the same side in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup earlier in the season.
City were ahead after 11 minutes when Harris headed home an Emma Donohoe corner and White made it two after 22 when she converted a pass from captain Georgina Tayman,
However it was far from plain sailing and the hosts pulled a goal back moments before the break to make it 2-1 at half time and change the half time team talk for managers Chris Smith and Connor Walton.
When the home side drew level at 2-2 after 58 minutes it became a test of character for the Hoops but a minute later they were in the lead again when the alert Harris made it 3-2 with her second of the game.
Walecki then made it 4-2 but, again, just as the Hoops were starting to breathe a little more easily the home side made it 4-3 as the game continued to ebb and flow.
It wasn’t until the 84th minute that they restored their two goal cushion when Bradley scored, swiftly followed by a second of the afternoon for White to seal the win and end a breathless game 6-3 to City.
“It was a superb game of football” Chris Smith told us. “The cup game was close but this time we took our chances. You can never relax and two or three times it looked like Woodley would get back into it but we have a tremendous spirit in this group and we knew we would be OK if we just kept playing how we wanted to play.
“Credit to the players for sticking together and to get another six goals, away from home, is a wonderful achievement".
