Andy Ballard: "To get back on the horse and pick up 3 points was massive."

Ethan Gough • January 24, 2022

Andy Ballard took charge in the dugout alongside Ross Jenkins on Saturday afternoon, and oversaw the Hoops' first victory of 2022.

Oxford City kicked off the new era with 3 points on the road after a 1-0 victory over Welling United.

Andy Ballard and Ross Jenkins took charge of the Hoops following David Oldfield’s departure last week and their first fixture at the helm this season saw them victorious. After the game, Ballard spoke to us and gave us his thoughts.

“It’s been a stressful and confusing week, but the boys have been fantastic.” said Ballard.

“We trained really well on Thursday and to then come to Welling and get a result is massive for us.”

City picked up their first win since the 3-2 win against Slough on Boxing Day, and will hopefully use this win to gain momentum and start putting three points on the board again on a regular basis. Similarly, it was the first clean sheet the side have kept since the 1-0 away win against Hungerford Town on the 4th December.

“We've had a couple of indifferent results recently, so to get back on the horse and pick up 3 points was massive.”

“It wasn’t one of the best games, it was one of those ones where you have to grind it out, do what you need to do and try and win the game.”

“We’ve kept a few clean sheets this season. We’re on a bit of a poor run in terms of conceding goals so to be defensively sound today and to get the win is exactly what we wanted.”

“Both teams could’ve scored 3 or 4 goals today quite easily. They probably shaded it at half time, so we just had to go in there and speak to the boys to reassure them.”

“When you go away to teams at this level you have to work as a team, you have to be a collective and give everything you need to win the game.”

Our next fixture is against Havant & Waterlooville at the Velocity Stadium and you can buy tickets
