Oxford City Women found their higher league visitors just too strong this afternoon as Oxford United Women proved comfortable winners in a pre-season friendly at Court Place Farm.
United, who will again press for promotion from the WSL 2 in the coming months, had too much for City in every department and after a Sarah King goal in the opening exchanges the result became a formality as the end game became different for the two teams: United getting a chance to look at new options and attacking ideas, City gaining fitness and working ferociously hard to close down their highly-rated opponents.
They did so gamely with captain Georgina Tayman leading by example and nobody’s head dropping as the team spirit shone through despite the goals totting up - 7-0 at the break 10-1 by the end with Ellen White deservedly grabbing a late goal for the hard-working home side.
As Men's First Team boss Sam Cox said 24 hours earlier after his team's second nine goal win of pre-season, the result at this stage is irrelevant. Women's boss Connor Walton will have learned just as much from this 90 minutes as counterpart Sam Rose.
We wish the U's well for the coming season and look forward to hosting their home games once again.
