Mad Dog - The Mickey Lewis Story | Releases Monday

Chris Williams • January 31, 2025

A new book is published on Monday telling the story of one of Oxford football’s greatest ever characters in aid of See Saw.

Mad Dog, The Mickey Lewis Story is a fantastic biography of Mickey, Oxford United stalwart and Oxford City and University football legend.

Writers Leo Ackerman and Alex Urwin were both coached by Mickey when they played for the University football side, a role he loved, and they talked to countless people who played alongside, worked with or were coached or influenced by Mickey.

Chris Wilder and Mickey shared promotion at Wembley with Oxford United and Chris told us

“Mickey was an extraordinary man. He had so much energy, suck knowledge of the game and it was an honour to get to know him during our time at Oxford. We remained very close and this book really shows the love that everyone who knew him still has for the man.”

Des Buckingham was coached by Mickey early in his career and told us

“Mickey was like a second father to me. He helped put me on the right path with my coaching career and was there for me whenever I needed him, not just with football but anything I needed. Just chatting to the writers for the book brought back some amazing memories and I’ve got my copy on order and can’t wait to read the impact I know he had on so many.”

Oxford City Owner Justin Merritt and Head of Partnerships Chris Williams both feature and Chris told himself

“Mickey’s death was a huge shock, losing someone who loved his football but also loved life. It left a big gap but Leo and Alex have done an amazing job, bringing everyone together and reminding us all what Mickey meant to us. People like Chris Jim Rosenthal and Des speak with real love in the book and he still unites us all in some way.

“On Saturday both Leo and Alex were playing in a University Old Boys game at the MGroup Stadium and Zack, Mickey’s boy, scored in that game. I regularly look out and see Zack doing one-to-one training on a Thursday with Josh Ashby, who Mickey coached. His influence remains huge wherever you look.”

The book is available at all good booksellers and online HERE.
