MATCH REPORT: Oxford City 2-0 Dulwich Hamlet

Tom Mallams • November 20, 2021

Goals from Joe Iaciofano & a wonder strike from Canice Carroll saw City to a 2-0 victory against promotion rivals Dulwich Hamlet.

The Hoops started the better of the two sides. However, a cagey first 25-minutes was broken by a flurry of chances for the Hamlet, with the most troublesome coming from a Jordan Higgs long-range volley firing the ball over City’s goal.

However, less than a minute later, a lofted cross from Michael Timlin to the back post was played back into the corridor of uncertainty by Chiki Kandi. Both Danny Mills and Ben Dudzinksi battled in the air but the Hoops keeper came out victorious, punching the ball away from danger.

With just over half an hour gone, City broke the deadlock! Canice Carroll played a looping ball towards the back post and George Harmon's  side-footed volley across the face of goal was tapped into an empty net by Iaciofano to open the scoring.

Just before the half-time whistle, a breakdown in communication between Zico Asare and Dudzinski allowed Darren McQueen an opportunity to level the match, yet pressure from Asare forced the winger to blaze the shot over the bar.

Half-Time: Oxford City 1-0 Dulwich Hamlet

City started the second-half brightly, Zac McEachran collected the ball 25-yards out and playing a threaded ball into the path of Harry Kyprianou, who fired a left footed strike goal bound, only to be met by the hands of Hamlet Goalkeeper Grainger.

The next chance of the game fell to the visitors, a floated corner by Giovanni McGregor was pounced upon by the head of the captain Jack Holland, who saw his header skim the top of the bar for a goal kick.

City responded in no time with Joe Iaciofano testing Grainger with his strike across goal but the Dulwich keeper was up to the challenge, producing a diving save to push the ball out for a City corner.

On the hour mark, Chiki Kandi picked up the ball 30-yards out and ran at the City defence. A path carved open for the forward but his shot flew wide of the post, failing to level the match.

10 minutes later and the Hoops doubled their lead. A tough battle in the box between Iaciofano and the Hamlet defenders saw the ball cleared out into the path of Carroll. He took his time to finesse an extraordinary shot into the bottom right corner of the net to give City a two-goal cushion in emphatic style.

The final chance of the game fell in City’s favour, a driving run by Kyprianou down the right wing ended with a ball into the box towards the unmarked Iaciofano who could only direct his shot over the bar.

All-in-all it was a controlled performance from the Hoops, who managed to see the 2-0 scoreline to the final-whistle and secure not just a HUGE three points but a sixth clean-sheet in seven league games.
