Oxford City suffered their worst defeat of the season as a clinical Curzon Ashton romped to a 5-0 win at the MGroup Stadium this evening.
Two goals from Stefan Mols and strikes from Luke Griffiths, Isaac Buckley-Ricketts and Luis Lacey earned the Nash all three points as City's fine form slipped.
With both teams zipping the ball around and intent on playing nice football the game was easy on the eye without either keeper having much to do in the first 20 minutes. In fact City dominated possession in the opening quarter of the game and were comfortable but then four minutes of unexpected Ashton action turned the game on its head.
The Visitors had looked dangerous on the break and after one move they threatened with a free kick that flew inches over the bar. However, that was just a case of resetting the sights and on 37 minutes Griffiths fired home from 30 yards with a superb opener.
City never recovered. Indeed they barely had time to draw breath before another swift break ended with Mols doubling the advantage by cutting inside and firing inside the near post to make it 2-0.
When Mols slid in to convert a Buckley-Ricketts cross after 67 minutes City were doomed and a mirror image goal on 75 saw Buckley -Ricketts finish from close range to make it 4-0 and end the competition with Lacey's fine finish just adding salt to the wound.
On Saturday City knocked the leaders off top spot, today they were a mere shadow of that side. This Saturday sees them compete for a place in the FA Trophy quarter finals, at home to Forest Green. Time for the real City to return.
