A remarkable thirteen players named in the squad had progressed through the club’s youth system at some point, eight of those players starting in the game.
On the night, doubles from Jayden Carbon & Gerald Muchechetere, supplemented by a Niko Nenomen-Millar header, secured the victory. All three scorers have represented the Hoops at a U19 level via our Velocity programme.
Though, perhaps most impressive of all was the inclusion of U16’s striker Charlie Bacon on the bench, after turning sixteen just days ago.
However, focusing on one individual in particular, Jayden Carbon had a particularly impressive game.
Jayden has been with Oxford City since the age of eight, and reinforces the club’s core values of giving young players from across Oxfordshire (or anywhere for that matter) a chance to develop and thrive in the game.
In recent times Jayden, along with Latrell Humphrey-Ewers & Gerald Muchechetere, have all broken into the first-team squad. Patrick Osbourne and Niko Nenomen-Millar have also broken into senior squads, albeit on loan with Didcot Town & North Leigh respectively.
Last season, Ewan Clark certainly made an impact after graduating from City’s U23 side, and made a name for himself in the first team.
So much so, his performances earned him a transfer to Championship side Bristol City.
Even further back from that, players such as Gareth McCleary and Udoka Godwin-Malife have both gone on to have distinguished careers in the EFL after representing the Hoops.
The above are all examples that underpin what we try to achieve as a football club.
In fact, drifting away from the club’s own youth system, we have proven ourselves to be a springboard for talent in general too.
Last season, George Harmon & Zico Asare joined Clark in moving up the footballing pyramid, after some stellar performances in Vanarama National League South.
However, it’s not only in the men’s game where a clear pathway is appearing.
Oxford City Women have also benefitted from our commitment to growing the female side of the sport.
Velocity students Summer Major, Bailee Latimer, Ellie Stevens & Amy Matthews have all featured in the first team squad this season, whereas U23’s player of the season Jasmine Allen has made the step up to the first team almost seamlessly.
Furthermore, on International Women’s Day, we announced that we would be adding several more female junior teams to the club next season. A significant improvement to the female player pathway at the club which also have support from the local business community with M&M Waste Solutions signing up to support our female pathway for three years.
Going back to 1882, the club’s core values of being a club for local players to develop and thrive still rings true and we’re proud to represent our community.
Moreover, you too can get involved and play an important role in our story.
Our Velocity Programme is much more than football. The programme combines the sport with education (as well as acting as the club’s academy). Players wanting to join can sign up to an open evening by clicking here, or find out more about joining here.
Players at a younger age (regardless of gender) can also join the club! As alluded to earlier, we operate over thirty teams here at the club and have committed to several more next season. Click here to register your interest in joining one of our new female teams or existing male teams.
Finally, we’re looking for commercial partners to help us play an important role in youth football in Oxfordshire by supporting us financially! Our friends & family partnership has exclusive benefits and gives likeminded businesses a chance to be at the heart of its community alongside us. If you're interested, please email our Commercial Manager Caroline O'Connor on commercial@oxcityfc.co.uk , who will be able to explain more of what we can offer.
