The victory is much more than just a trophy (England’s first since 1966 by the way!) but feels like a defining moment when it comes to the Women’s game.
With a UEFA record crowd in attendance (87,192 a record for a UEFA competition in the men's & women's football) and millions more watching on from home, Anthony has said that the whole tournament has inspired a nation.
“I think the Euros have inspired everyone,” said Anthony.
“For me personally, seeing two strong women leading two strong teams at the final was amazing and that’s where I want to be. Also, for the team, seeing players like Lucy Bronze put her heart on the line, they’ll see those performances and want to replicate it.
“Going into training I think the intensity will be higher now as the performance will be in the back of their minds. I think our team will keep pushing and pushing until they can get to that higher level.”
Anthony watched the final in City’s 1882 Bar with her Hoops’ squad and Oxford United’s Women’s team and she said that it was typical of the togetherness the Lionesses have brought to the nation.
“The Euros has brought teams together. I’m very new to the team but spending that time with my team watching the Euros was fantastic, cheering them on and celebrating as a team together.
“Not only have we won the Euros, the Lionesses have won over teams up and down the country and helped our team bond together which has been fantastic.
“It was good to watch it with the Oxford United girls. I was talking to their manager Liam Gilbert and it was nice to talk to him about tactics and get a good understanding of the game and seeing things from their point of view.
To see both Women’s teams from Oxford watching together it had that community aspect to it which was fantastic.”
City Women are preparing to embark on a new season under new stewardship. Ben Lucas (who took the team at the end of last season) will be staying on and with the eyes on women’s football being at an all time high, Aliyah is hoping that Oxford City can continue the Lionesses legacy at the RAW Charging Stadium.
“I’m hoping we can get some more people down at the ground to watch us.
“If you’re coming to watch us, you’re coming to watch a good game of football. Not only that, you’ll be giving my team some encouragement which is exactly what we need.
“There’s no need to pay. Just come down, have a watch and watch some decent football. Maybe bring someone young, a young girl coming to watch would be fantastic. Let them see the first team and let them see what it’s about and what women’s football can do.
“It’s always the aim to inspire. Whether it's Oxford City or anywhere, we need to encourage girls to get into football.
Can we keep that fire burning and keep encouraging girls to get into football.”
