City roar back to winning ways

Oxford City got back to winning ways this afternoon as they powered their way to a comfortable win over Farsley Celtic.

First half goals from Corie Andrews and Josh Ashby and two fine goals after the break by Tom Scott and Zac McEachran saw City end a three game losing streak with one of their most impressive performances of the season so far

As has become the pattern at the MGroup Stadium, there was an early goal to open the game up and in truth the visitors never really recovered from it. It came after eight minutes when Ashby challenged for a knockdown and the ball broke for Andrews to drill the ball home beyond the diving Kieran Flavell to make it 1-0

Visibly lifted by that goal, City knocked the ball about superbly with McEachran in sparkling form and Jayden Carbon taking on players at will down the right flank. A superb move on the opposite flank allowed Lewis Coyle to tee up Ashby for a left-footed effort that Flavell did well to palm away and Jalen Jones powered a header just off target as City dominated the first half.

On 33 minutes they were two goals up when Farsley gave Ashby far too much space 25 yards out, The influential midfielder fired at goal, it flew off a defender and with Flavell flat-footed the ball flashed into the net for Ashby’s second goal of the season.

It was City’s best half of the season but they paid a price when impressive MK Dons loanee Charlie Stirland landed awkwardly right on the half time whistle and had to go off with a dislocated shoulder - we wish him well and trust that he makes a swift recovery.

The enforced change, Andre Burley on for the second half, didn't alter City's flow at all and ten minutes into the second half it was game over when Fleet and Ashby carved Celtic wide open and Scott, always full of running, raced away for a really neatly taken fourth goal of the season.

The nomadic Celts had no answers on the day and it might have been more than four; Ashby seeing a shot saved and McEachran at his unplayable best. Man of the Match, McEachran thundered home a fourth goal after yet more good approach play and City were coasting.

There was one negative, when Fielding's header in the third minute of additional time pulled back a late consolation for Farsley.

Boss Ross Jenkins has repeatedly warned that his team is a work in progress so nobody should get carried away by one result. It was, however, both impressive and entertaining with the win lifting the Hoops out of the bottom four and looking up at the league table.

£5 entry today:  the lowest price to watch football in the top six divisions rewarded with the most entertaining 90 minutes imaginable.  Excellent.
