Despite losing two key players in his squad, Oxford City Manager Ross Jenkins has said that he is pleased with the reputation the club is gaining in regards to developing young players.
Southampton recalled Jack Bycroft so that the Goalkeeper could join EFL League Two side Swindon Town on a permanent basis. Whereas, Fulham recalled Striker Olly Sanderson, in order to send him on loan to EFL side Sutton United.
Both players impressed during their stints at the RAW Charging Stadium, with Sanderson in particular playing a key role over two spells with the club.
Upon their departures, Jenkins spoke highly of the departing duo and praised the environment at the club in which players can develop & progress.
On the departures Jenkins said: “Olly has been professional, hard-working and has had a great attitude since joining us.
“Olly contributed to our promotion season and has gone on to score some valuable goals this season. Hopefully we’ve played a small part in developing Olly so he can kick on again in the Football League.
“Jack has been another success story after he joined us on loan and has gone onto join Swindon Town permanently.
“Giving players the opportunity to develop and kick on has been a real pleasure and we hope the two continue to develop and progress.”
The two loanees join a list of players who have represented the club and have since taken a step up the football pyramid.
Before the start of the previous campaign, Ewan Clark, George Harmon & Zico Asare all earned moves further up the football pyramid, whereas Klaidi Lolos jumped up two divisions to join Crawley Town more recently.
Perhaps City have been a victim of their own success with the departures? However, Jenkins believes that the Hoops have created an environment in which players can thrive at the club.
“The track record has been good when it comes to development. I think that comes down to creating a good environment for players to:
One, express themselves, and two, take things on board and absorb new information.
“We want to encourage all of our young players to progress and not hold them back. We want to work with them on and off the pitch and make them into the best player possible, whilst assisting them in their progression as a professional.
“We’ve had a good success rate so far, so hopefully we’re creating a good reputation for Oxford City to progress young players and give them a good grounding in the game.”
