City’s run of five consecutive wins was halted in frustrating fashion after a 95th minute equaliser rescued a point for Taunton Town in the VNSL.
Alfie Potter had given the visitors a first-half lead before a chaotic ending. Both sides were reduced to ten men after Lee Lucas and Josh Parker both picked up double yellows preceding Dave Sims-Burgess’ equaliser.
Despite the result, City’s unbeaten run in 2023 remains intact following a hard-fought encounter with the Hoops boss acknowledging the positives despite late disappointment.
“I thought first half we were superb” Jenkins said.
“We played some great football and kept it away from them. It was all us in possession and I think we limited them to maybe one shot all half.
“Second half, they threw some changes onto the pitch, made a few subs and ended up putting the ball on us and smashing it long and fair play, it worked.
“The second half was a bit more of them and we struggled to get out of our half at times, but I think to concede in that sort of manner is obviously disappointing.”
Speaking on the overall result, Jenkins accepted that despite conceding late on, a draw was a fair reflection of the story of the game.
Jenkins said, “In the last ten minutes, we could have probably managed the game a little bit better but this is all part of learning.
“We’ve got a small squad and we’ve got a team who are together and it’s important that we take the positives out of it because there were loads of positives. But again, it’s going to feel sickening for the boys at the moment, but I think in true reflection, we were better first half, they were better in the second half and a draw is probably the correct scoreline.”
The Hoops have themselves come a long way in the sense of being recognised as a scalp in the league due to competing at the top of the division.
When asked about the transformation of the side’s mentality since taking over at the Raw Charging Stadium, Jenkins praised the progression and character of his side ahead of a challenging visit to Dartford on Saturday.
“I think a couple of seasons ago we would’ve rolled over in the second half, and they would’ve put two against us. I think the character of the backline, the midfield boys, the forwards, the goalie, the togetherness we’ve got defending at the moment, I think in true reflection, they’d accept that as well.
“But again, it’s just the last dying moments when it’s a bit chaotic with everyone up but I think we’ve got to reflect quickly on where we are and where we’ve come from.
“We’ve just got to keep going game by game because we’re in a good position and we can’t think about this game too much.
“Taunton away is one we want to chalk off and we’ve done that. We got good points at home against them, and we’ve taken a point here. It’s a difficult place to come so we’ve got to pick ourselves up and go again.”
