MATCH REPORT: Chippenham Town 1-0 Oxford City

An Alex Bray goal proved to be the difference as Oxford City fell to a 1-0 defeat to Chippenham Town in Vanarama National League South.

Ross Jenkins named an unchanged starting eleven from the victory against Hungerford Town on Good Friday with the only change to the squad being Ewan Clark's return to the bench.

City started the game the better of the two sides and thought they took the lead in only the 7th minute. Joe Iaciofano earned a corner after his near post strike forced a save from Will Henry. The resulting set piece fell to Iaciofano’s feet from a knockdown and he hit the back of the net, only to be denied by the linesman’s offside flag.

Despite the early pressure, Chippenham Town created a number of chances to put City on the backfoot. Alefe Santos collected the ball on the left planting a cross onto the head of Luke Russe but his effort was fired down Ben Dudzinski's throat and into his safe hands.

No more than a minute later, Santos shrugged off a challenge and cut into the edge of the box to unleash a powerful strike. However, Dudzinski produced a stunning fingertip save to deny the midfielder.

In the last real action of the half, the Hoops had a golden chance to break the deadlock. Iaciofano squared a pass to Elliot Benyon for a first-time strike but his effort rattled the crossbar and away from danger, to the host's relief.

The Bluebirds returned to the field with a bang and broke the deadlock shortly after the restart. Alex Bray drove along the edge of the box and found a gap to fire across goal and into the top left corner, giving Dudzinski no chance and Chippenham the lead.

Cole DaSIlva was involved in the action soon after, sending a cross from the right into Iaciofano in the middle of the box, but the forward could not direct his header on target.

Ross Jenkins felt changes were needed to get back into the game, most notably Alfie Potter made his long-awaited return to the pitch after an injury-stricken season.

With ten minutes left to play, Santos was involved again. He cut inside from the left wing and rifled a shot goal-bound, smacking the underside of the crossbar and only inches away from doubling the home side’s lead. Luckily for City, it bounced to safety.

The Hoops now turn their focus to their next fixture as they host Braintree Town at the Velocity Stadium needing just one point to secure a play-off spot.
