MATCH REPORT: Winchester Flyers 5-3 Oxford City

Chloe Atkins • December 3, 2021

Oxford City Women suffered a 5-3 defeat to Winchester Flyers on Sunday.

An own-goal alongside strikes from Georgina Tayman and Amelia Alves-Martins got City onto the scoresheet but it wasn't to be on the day.

The Hoops got off to the worst possible start, conceding three-goals in the opening twenty minutes.

Just after the half-hour mark, Georgina Tayman pulled one back for City  with a long-range finish over the Goalkeeper's head. Not long after, Alisha Johnson's cross was headed in by Amelia Alves-Martins, beating the keeper in her first appearance back since injury.

Winchester scored again before the interval to regain their two-goal advantage. However, it wasn't all plain sailing for the Flyers, as their Goalkeeper was forced off with injury meaning they had to play the rest of the game with their striker in net.

Half-Time: Winchester Flyers 4-2 Oxford City

Straight after the interval, City found some hope after the Flyers conceded an own-goal to make it 4-3.

City striker Hadjyianni was causing problems for Winchester and she came only inches from equalising when she lunged at a strong ball that flashed across the face of the net in the 63rd minute.

City were in the ascendancy but another Winchester goal came against the run of play when free-kick was fired in for the hosts.

Ten minutes from time, Gabrielle Heath slotted the ball through the Flyers goalkeeper's legs and seemingly into the net. However, two Flyers' defenders frantically cleared the ball off the line. The referee seemed to believe the ball did not cross the line despite the protests from the City side.

In difficult conditions, Heath made a run forward beating the Winchester defender and her cross found the dangerous Hadjyianni who made no mistake in redirecting the ball into the back of the net. However, a foul against Heath saw the referee rule-out a City fourth.

With no change in the score line in added time, Manager Mark Andrews side faced an unfortunate defeat. The win means Winchester leapfrog City into 7th spot in the Southern Region Women's Football League.

The Hoops now shift their focus to their next league match where they host fourth placed Eastleigh on December 12th.
