ROSS JENKINS PREVIEWS HAVANT CLASH

Oxford City boss Ross Jenkins is determined to make sure that his side don't get caught out to a Havant side who are 'due a win' in Vanarama National League South.

After spending much of the season in the top two this season, recent form has seen the South Coast side slip out of the play-off places all together.

However, Jenkins believes that despite their form, they have what it takes to win on Saturday and the Hoops will have to be at their best to stop that from happening.

“Now we’ve got to focus on Havant, they’re due a win and we’ve got to make sure it’s not against us - I think that’s the bottom line,” said the City manager, aware of the threat they still pose.

“They’re having a bit of a rocky period in terms of results, they’ll be really fishing for that win. I think if we apply ourselves properly, which we will when we train this week, we’ll address them as we would any other team. Whenever we look after the performance, the result takes care of itself.”

“I think on Saturday, Havant will want to come to us and beat us, they’re not going to give us that much respect. We’ve got to embrace the challenge, where we are, and the expectation that teams want to beat us now. We want to finish as high as possible, of course, but I think we’ll address the end of the season when it’s the end of the season.

The Hampshire-based side were forced into a change in March, when manager Paul Doswell was banned for 12 matches by the FA. Doswell has since moved into a role as the club’s director of football, with Jamie Collins taking charge of the side.

“They’re due a win. They’ve had a lot of draws, so they’ve got spirit and they’ve got character. But we can’t just look at the form, we’ve got to look at the club and the personnel, they’ve got some really good players. We are where we are for a reason, and they are as well for whatever reason that is.”

Saturday’s fixture coincides with Oxford City’s annual family day, and with a larger crowd expected at the RAW Charging Stadium, Ross Jenkins is hoping his team can impress those in attendance, “It’s the last home game of the season, it will be important for our fans to be there, and for them to come down, support and get right behind us.”

“The more [supporters] the merrier. Our focus is to put in a performance, and if we can please the fans by doing that, that’s a bonus. We want our fans to enjoy the football, so it’s important that we get the on-pitch stuff correct. I’m sure it’ll be a good atmosphere and a good last game at home.”

The City boss is also hoping that his side can become more clinical in front of goal, despite last weekend's 5-1 win away at Dover Athletic.

“5-1 does look good,” said Jenkins, “But I thought we were disappointed not to get seven. I think the way we played warranted it; we created so many chances and opportunities that I think that was the only downer for the day.”

“We conceded early which I think the three-and-a-bit hours on the coach didn’t help with, but once we conceded it actually made us play better. We wanted the clean sheet but I think that goal sort of woke us up a little bit. I think the only disappointing thing at the end of it, if you can be disappointed with 5-1, is that we didn’t score enough goals - it could’ve easily been seven. We know that we need to score more and we need to be better.”

“We work a lot on attacking play, and that’s why I was disappointed that we didn’t score seven. We work so hard in the week to create the opportunities, we just need to be a bit more ruthless in front of goal. When we really want to put teams to bed we can, but we need to do it more often and be more consistent with it,” Jenkins added.

The Hoops now have just two games remaining in National League South, before any potential play-off fixtures in early May. Asked whether he is tempted to rest players with the play-offs in mind, Jenkins said, “It is a tough one. Do you protect them or do you continue as normal? We’ve been getting results, so do you change what’s been working?”

“It would’ve been easy to just play our first team midweek against Thame [in the Oxfordshire Senior Cup], but it was important that we used the whole squad because we’re going to need them,” said Jenkins, keen to evenly distribute playing time.

“For the boys coming back from longer-term injuries, to get them minutes is only going to help us for the back-end of the season. I don’t think they’re going to get protected too much - the players - I don’t think they want protecting, I think they need to get through it and come through the other end altogether."
